The research — including what it doesn’t show.

Every study here names the people it studied, in the same breath as what it found. That matters more than it sounds: most research on smell training was done on people recovering lost smell, and using those results to sell something to healthy drinkers would be dishonest.

The short version. Training changes what you can name and what you can tell apart. There is no good evidence that it makes a healthy adult's nose more sensitive in general, and we do not claim it does.

Expertise is recognition, not equipment

Eleven expert wine judges were compared with eleven novices on olfactory threshold, odor recognition, odor identification, and how consistently they named things. The experts recognized wine-relevant odors far better — but their olfactory sensitivity was similar to the novices’. The authors concluded the advantage came from perceptual skill, not from better vocabulary or semantic memory. We call this split perception and association — the signal, and the naming — and the naming is the trainable half.

That words are the mechanism. This study specifically found the experts’ edge was not explained by their language for wine. It is the reason we say your nose doesn’t change — not the reason we teach vocabulary.

For you, this means: your nose is not the problem and never was. The skill you lack is recognition, and recognition is learnable.

Naming and memory

Across several experiments, consistent and correct naming of an odor went with nearly perfect recognition memory, while inconsistent or incorrect naming went with very weak memory or none. Labels only helped when they were available both when learning the smell and when recalling it.

That naming improves your sense of smell. It is a memory finding. It is also why Savorant asks you to say the word out loud at both ends — when you meet a smell and when you go looking for it again.

For you, this means: saying the word out loud is not a ritual — it is the mechanism. Name it when you meet it, and the name is there when you need it again.

A study that complicates our own line

We say “your nose doesn’t change.” Here is the work that argues with us, because leaving it out would make this page advertising.

Explicit sensory training did improve wine experts’ detection thresholds for specific compounds they trained on — a real change in sensitivity, not just in naming.

What we take from it
That “your nose doesn’t change” is a simplification. Deliberate practice on one compound can lower your threshold for that compound. What it does not do is make you generally more sensitive — and a whiskey app is not going to hand you a laboratory dilution series. We keep the line because it is right about the thing people actually mean by it, and we are telling you here where it is loose.

What nobody has studied

Whether a consumer whiskey app improves tasting. Not us either. No one has run that study.

Your blind-test record would be the first data of its kind. If you opt in — and it is off unless you turn it on, under a coded ID with no name and no email attached — we will publish what we find, including if it turns out to be nothing.
